Westpac Commercial Building

November 15, 2016 6:17 pm

This project posed Richard with the problem of designing a modern commercially attractive building which not only had to be built above the street level for flooding problems, but the front elevation was facing the morning sun and the developer required a 5 star energy efficient building.

This created an opportunity for the architect to design a grand entrance portico and stairs up to the bank’s main entry. The modern form of this entry portico’s large overhangs to the street provided a solution to the morning sun heat loads, playing a large factor in achieving the 5 star energy rating required by the developer. The necessary disabled access ramp was artfully hidden behind the solid forms of the hydrant cupboards, enabling a purity of architectural symmetry to the street frontage.

The building has made a valuable addition to the expanding commercial Streetscape in Coffs Harbour, and from important vantage points along the street, the ‘V’ shaped slatted blades on the top floor combine to look very much like the Westpac logo! At night time, the building makes a magical contribution to the streetscape with the well integrated lighting highlighting the monumental architectural features
